Glenwood Landing Second Graders Participate in Chemical
Investigation Involving Slime, Goo and Ooze

Article by NSHS Senior Stephanie Jenks

On December 7th, Glenwood Landing’s second graders spent the day in teacher
Audra Marcantonio’s classroom participating in a hands-on “Slime, Goo, and Ooze” program. Under the direction of Ms. Christie from the Science Museum of Long Island, the students took part in four different investigations relating to the study of “changes”.

The first chemical investigation involved Elmer’s glue and water with Borax. This mixture served as the linking detergent that binds to glue. The second investigation called “Flubber” included a polyvinyl alcohol plastic combined with Borax. The third investigation helped students learn about absorbing agents which involved diaper dust and water. The last investigation enabled students to study water crystals mixed with water.

Throughout the course of the day, students were able to explore their curiosity with the various materials using all of their senses but taste. The second graders left with plenty of thought, inquiry and discussion related to their investigations on the study of “changes”.
