On November 9, 2009, Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick visited the Glenwood Landing School Library and read to third and fourth graders. The Superintendent “Read Aloud” has become a favorite tradition at Glenwood Landing started by Librarian Lucy Cassidy-VanHoff.
As Dr. Melnick read Great Rabbit and the Wildcat, an Algonquian tale retold by Andy Gregg, fourth graders connected to it from their Social Studies unit on Native Americans. All students were Yankees fans during the reading and discussion of the poem about Babe Ruth, Home Run by Robert Burleigh. Third graders had great fun guessing their favorite sports in Jack Prelutsky’s Good Sports poems. During the reading of Albert by Donna Jo Napoli, the students learned that friendship can change your life forever. The students were attentive listeners and after each book, they shared their feelings of the stories and details that they remembered from the text.
