Students Pick Pumpkins off the Vine

This October, elementary students had the opportunity to visit Schmitt’s Farm, an authentic farm environment where they not only learn about pumpkins and root vegetables, but experience how to be farmer themselves. It is located in Melville, New York.
At the farm, students had the opportunity to pick a pumpkin right off the vine, visit the corn fields, and learn about planting and the care of a number of vegetables including string beans, tomatoes, radishes and potatoes. To the student’s delight, they even went on a hay ride!
In many of the kindergarten classes prior to the trip, teachers taught their students the importance of bus safety and then upon their return engaged them in classroom discussions or an activity about the planting process.
