GH Production Club Presents The Great Depression
Article and photos by Shelly Newman

Recently, fifth graders had the opportunity to be a part of a Production Club. The production was two years in the making. Last year, two fourth graders were learning about The Great Depression. As they researched and studied about this difficult time in history, the two students decided to write a script, When the Great Depression Struck. In September 2009, the students chose to produce the performance.  They quickly learned that there were many roles in a production including: performers, set design, stage crew, costume, and advertising. It was a tremendous undertaking.

Fifth graders who joined the Production Club made a commitment to produce the play. They each gave up their recess time for three months, came to school early, and stayed late once a week. Additionally, they researched all the production elements including: designing the scenery, creating costumes for the performers, selecting the music for the time period, staging the props during the performance, orchestrating the lights and much more...

Congratulations to all of the fifth graders who worked so hard to produce such an amazing production of The Great Depression. Additionally, many thanks to Enrichment teacher Brian Kline and high school teacher Janet Goldberg for advising the students during this exciting and educational process.
