Let the Games Begin! GWL Winter Olympics
Photos by Shelly Newman

In conjunction with the 2010 Winter Olympics being held in Vancouver, Glenwood Landing has been participating in its own Winter Olympic Games. Students simulated the different events in the gym while improving their health and skill related parts of fitness. The events included cross-country skiing, ice hockey, curling, skeleton, luge, bobsled, ski jump, ice skating, and speed skating.

Physical Education Teacher Stephanie DeBonis said, “During our Winter Olympics at Glenwood, I wanted the students to improve eye-hand and eye-foot coordination, upper body strength, coordination, balance, power, speed, and accuracy as well as communication, cooperation, and teamwork.” She added,  “They also learned how to use a stop watch and determine the fastest time for the luge; how to make the best combination of power and accuracy for curling; and how to communicate and cooperate when cross-country skiing together.

With the help of Ms. DiLeo from computers, Mr. Oakley from art, and Mrs. Cassidy-Van Hoff from the library, this unit has become interdisciplinary with students learning about the Winter Olympics from all aspects of education. Let the games begin!
