SC Students Investigate Global Issues
Third, fourth and fifth graders at Sea Cliff Elementary have been investigating interest-based global issues, while participating in a social justice enrichment unit of study. Enrichment teacher Diane Krupin said, “The study encourages students to observe and question the world around them, recognize and examine local and global social injustices, identify and research a meaningful problem, work with others to brainstorm solutions, and implement social action plans, and evaluate outcomes and reflect on what was learned.”
Fifth grade students researched topics including, Child Labor, Children Soldiers, Global Warming and Energy, Deforestation, and World Hunger and created a webpage to present their findings. Ms. Krupin added, “They hope that as visitors explore their discoveries they will gain a deeper awareness of the global issues that affect all of us, as well as the solutions that exist. The students realized that by educating others they are making a meaningful difference and moving us closer to a more just world.”
To see the webpage created by the fifth graders, please visit the North Shore Schools website at http://www.teacherweb.com/NY/NorthShoreSchools/Enrichment/ and look for the icon titled Sea Cliff Fifth Grade Social Action Research.
Students express their own ideas to "Pay it Forward" by creating posters to educate the school community about their research on global issues, which include Child Labor, Global Warming, Deforestation, Alternative Sources of Energy and Children Soldiers.
