Martin Luther King Fine Arts & Essay Celebration

Fourth and fifth graders in the Art Club at Glen Head Elementary recently submitted artwork for an art contest called “Martin Luther King Fine Arts & Essay Celebration” under the direction of Suzan Carola. The art pieces had to be based on Martin Luther King's six principles of nonviolence including: Nonviolence is Not for Cowards, The Beloved Community is a World of Peace with Justice, Attack Injustice, Not Persons Doing Unjust Deeds, Accept Suffering Without Retaliation for the Sake of the Cause to Achieve a Goal, Avoid Internal Violence of the Spirit as Well as External Physical Violence, and The Universe is on the Side of Justice. The student artwork was sent to Albany is being featured in a NYS Exhibit marking Martin Luther King Day.

Ms. Carola said, “We discussed the six Kingian principles and each student chose one that resonated with them. They visually interpreted the concepts using expressive color and graphic interpretation.” She added, “My students worked in teams or alone, with mixed mediums including acrylic paint, images, paper, and marker on canvases. Their finished pieces demonstrate sophisticated thinking as they were able to grasp the complex concepts and make their own meaning from Dr. King’s important principles.”

Bravo to the fourth and fifth graders in the Glen Head Art Club who had beautiful artwork submitted included Nancy Fernandez, Peter Imparato, Maddy Rojas, Gillian Neos, Aman Patel, Alexa Waiksnis, Stephanie Alvarez, Kaitlyn Papasidero, Cristina D'Amico, Andrew Gerard, and Claudia Scala. Each student will receive a certificate for their participation.

Ms. Carola concluded by saying, “I am sure our school-wide (and district-wide) focus against bullying and the Dignity for All Act helped my students understand and beautifully execute these important principals. They all enjoyed the challenge and I am very proud of them.”
