“Be Smart About Your Health”
The Dangers of Chemicals
Recently, Christine Bently, a speaker from Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc., presented information about the dangers of chemicals to Ms. Dana Francis’ environmental classes at North Shore High School.
Be Smart About Your Health aims to create awareness about potentially toxic chemicals and the choices one can make to avoid them. Mrs. Bently spoke about the threats that are found in everyday items, such as household cleaners, plastics, and food.
Organic foods, safe cleaning alternatives, and recommendations and suggestions for future health benefits were discussed at length. Student Pat Lynn reported, “I went home and showed my Mom the dangerous plastics list and she went through all our plastic containers, throwing away any that were unsafe.”
Ms. Francis concluded by saying, “Since a growing body of scientific evidence has suggested that a variety of diseases and disabilities are the byproduct of repetitive exposure to chemicals in our daily lives, programs about avoiding exposure to these chemicals have become extremely important. Hopefully, students walked away with the ‘Precautionary Principle’ which guides us to take action and prevent harm to human health and the environment before it happens.”
