 “Who Moved My Cheese?”

Sixth grade Humanities classes at North Shore Middle School recently celebrated the culmination of reading Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson, M.D. The book is a motivational story that reveals profound truths about how to deal with change and provides the language and tools of how to recognize, understand, and accept it. As described by the students when asked “What the Story Was About?” they exclaimed, the “maze” represents the trials and tribulations of life, while the “cheese” represents our goals that we are trying to achieve.

Teacher Maria Perdios said, “Dealing with change is a big concern in everyone’s life. Transitioning from fifth to sixth grade affected all of our students so we began the year discussing the subject of change. Our classes read many short stories with this overall theme culminating with the popular story, Who Moved My Cheese?

During the culmination, the students had to choose from a list of many differentiated assignments and made many creative displays and posters to show their understanding of the book. Student Joe Magliocco thoughtfully stated, “You should always be ready and open for change.”

Sixth grader Grace Dima concluded by beautifully saying, “When change occurs, we shouldn’t give up or overanalyze it. We should keep going since you can’t be in control of change. Change can be good or sometimes bad but you can’t control it.”
