NUTRITION COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES OF March 13, 2008 AT 10:00A.M.

Members Present: Robyn Cartagine, Noreen Strassenreiter, Marge McCarrick and Laura Orticelle

·        Marge is still working on the “salad shakers”.

·        Kathy Drafted a letter to our State Representatives regarding the food choices the government sends to the school for use in the School Lunch Program.  This is a letter which would be signed by parents in our schools.  Marge presented the letter to Olivia Buatsi for her review and approval.  Olivia wanted to know how we are going to distribute these letters and to which schools in the District.  After a brief discussion we concluded that we would wait until September to distribute the letter after we see if Marge’s requests to the government for healthier foods has been honored.

·        Marge gave us each a copy of North Shore’s “Wellness Policy” for review.

·        Marge also gave us copies of the nutritional data for some of the old food products (i.e. plain bagel) and the nutritional data for the replacement items ( i.e. honey wheat bagel).

·        New snack choices were presented.  However, most did not make the cut despite the fact that they would have met the governments “choose sensibly” standards we are standing by our decision to eliminate all snacks containing high fructose corn syrup, BHT, MSG and other artificial enhancers.

·        We brought up the idea of a hot house again and decided to do a little investigating as to the cost to build such a structure and how big it would have to be in order to raise a substantial amount of produce to make it worth our efforts.

The next meeting will be held at 10:00am on April 10th in the Alumni Room.  Hope to see you all there.

Respectfully submitted by Robyn Cartagine.
