Grade	Curriculum & Materials	Assessments
K- 5	Curriculum and Material: The North Shore Schools comprehensive classroom literacy program in grades K-5 encompasses reading, writing, listening and speaking for the twenty-first century learner. The key understandings and learning outcomes align with the District mission statement, the Standards of the National Council of Teachers of English, the New York State Standards and those of the National Endowment for the Humanities. All North Shore elementary teachers in grades K-5 are expected to implement a Balanced Literacy Framework comprised of Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop, and Language/Word Study. Instruction is provided through explicit teaching, guided practice, independent practice, reflection and sharing. Early Literacy Skills and Phonics are supported through the Multi-Sensory Fundations program in grades K-3, and Word Work/Spelling instruction is supported through the Rebecca Sitton program in grades 4 and 5.	Assessments: Instructional decisions will be determined through ongoing assessment, both formative and summative. In addition to the yearly New York State English Language Arts Assessment, all students in grades 1-5 are administered the Group Reading Assessment Diagnostic Evaluation (GRADE) in May, as a district-wide normed assessment to measure growth over time. All students K-5 have a Literacy Performance Profile that serves as an individual student record of reading and writing performance from year-to-year. In Grades K-2 students are administered the early literacy assessments deemed critical for future reading success. All students in grades K-5 are administered a running record to determine the child’s reading level (independent and instructional) as well as reading strengths and goals. Writing samples are collected and evaluated to determine writing instruction. Based on the assessments, targeted instruction is provided in both large and small flexible groups.
6th	Inter-disciplinary Humanities Program from Ancient Civilization to the Middle Ages. -Trade books -Non-fiction· Selected readings -Projects	A variety of classroom assessments are used to determine growth and performance in reading, writing, speaking & listening.
7th & 8th	English Curriculum aligned with New York State standards. - Novels - Non-fiction selections - Short fiction - Poetry	-Classroom assessment - 8th grade New York State English Language Arts assessment administered in January or February.
9th	· English Curriculum aligned with New York State Standards - Various works of fiction, drama, poetry, and non-fiction. - Honors courses available upon request in spring.	Classroom assessments with emphasis on composition. No state exam.
10th	-English Curriculum aligned with New York State standards. Various works ranging from ancient to contemporary texts. - Honors courses available upon request in spring.	Classroom assessments with emphasis on composition. No state exam.
11th	-American Writers Regents curriculum designed to prepare students for the English Regents. -Advanced Placement Language and Composition; a rigorous course of study of advanced composition, rhetoric, and literary analysis.	-Classroom assessment - English Regents - a 6-hour assessment given over two days in June. No state exam. · A.P. exam in May
Senior Programs	-Long Island Studies -American Culture Studies - Renaissance	Senior Experience that involves an internship or a research project is required of all students.
