Centre Island Bird Sanctuary Visits Glenwood Landing
On April 20, 2026, Ms. Gabby Berritto from the Centre Island Bird Sanctuary came to Glenwood Landing School’s outdoor classroom to teach the elementary students about the wonderful world of birds! She said, “Through our EcoExplorers Program, students studied the remarkable ways birds have evolved to survive and thrive in their environments. The adventure didn't stop there; students also headed out on a guided bird walk outside in the woods close to the school to listen to, spot, and identify local species.”
This program was brought to Glenwood Landing School by the CI Bird Sanctuary, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization based on Long Island dedicated to avian conservation education. Through hands-on programs, nature walks, and guided boating expeditions, the CI Bird Sanctuary inspires younger generations to discover and appreciate the incredible birdlife right in their own backyard. Students in one of Ms. Marcantonio’s classes saw a red-tailed hawk among other bird species.
To continue birding watching at home, please download the free Merlin Bird ID app and see how many species you can spot! Additionally, explore more of what the Centre Island Bird Sanctuary has to offer all North Shore students at www.cibirdsanctuary.org.
Ms. Berritto concluded by saying, “Thank you for allowing us to share our love of birds with your students. We hope it's the start of a lifelong appreciation for the natural world!” Thank you to Ms. Audra Marcantonio and all the Glenwood Landing students who participated in this hands-on outdoor educational experience which began in the GWL outdoor classroom!
Happy bird watching! Go Vikings Go!
