Red Ribbon Honor

North Shore Middle School Forms Red Ribbon to Honor and Commemorate the Lives Lost to Drug Addiction

To culminate Red Ribbon Week, everyone at North Shore Middle School formed a giant Red Ribbon outside on the athletic field. On October 27th, at the beginning of 9th period, an announcement was made inviting all classes to participate in a “walk out on drugs.”  The purpose of the silent walk out was to honor and commemorate the lives lost to drug addiction.
Earlier in the week, North Shore Middle School began celebrating a variety of important campaigns designed to raise awareness for important causes and efforts organized by the middle school student groups, social workers, and guidance counselors.

The activities outlined below took place at North Shore Middle School from October 19-27, 2017 to teach and engage students in a number of important topics affecting Long Island and our Nation. They will continue to be discussed in North Shore Middle School health classes throughout the year.

  • Thursday, October 19, 2017, - Spirit Day sponsored by GSA (Gay Straight Alliance)                                                                                                                             Students and faculty were encouraged to wear purple to stand against bullying.
  • Friday, October 20, 2017 - YANKEES Day!

MS wears NY Yankee apparel in support of continued Yankees success.

  • Monday, October 23rd – Friday, October 27, 2017 - Red Ribbon Week (organized by our school social workers)

  • Monday October 23, 2017 - “Say No to Drugs” Sign Creation

Teachers were encouraged to wear red ribbon shirts and Advisory classes created, “Say No To Drugs,” signs. A banner was on display in the cafeteria on Monday and students were asked to sign the banner to pledge to be drug free (organized by the Student Council)

  • Tuesday October 24. 2017 - Drums Against Drugs

MS enjoyed the beats of Mr. Larsen’s students in the cafeteria to drum out drugs & dangerous substances. Throughout the day, a chime rang every 19 minutes to represent the frequency of lives lost to addiction. Every 19 minutes, an American dies due to drug overdose.

  • Wednesday, October 25, 2017 - National Unity Day                                                   Organized by MS Guidance Counselors, everyone was encouraged to wear Orange to send a hopeful message everyone can put aside their differences and unite to form a strong bond. Lunch activities took place to support the message of unity day.

  • Thursday, October 26, 2017 Guest Speaker – Steven Dodge, of the S.L.A.T.E. Project

Mr. Dodge spoke to students in grades 7 & 8 about the importance of living a sober life and about his experience as a recovering addict.

  • Friday, October 27, 2017 - Walk Out On Drugs

At the beginning of 9th period, all classes were encouraged to wear red and participate in a “walk out” on drugs. The Student Council led the walk out.

Many thanks to all of the administration, faculty, guidance counselors, social workers and students for organizing these important awareness raising activities at the middle school. Many thanks to Adrienne Daley for taking this incredible North Shore Middle School Red Ribbon photo.

This year, Goal #1 of the 2017-18 District Goals emphasizes the continued priority of the development of a community plan of action to address issues of substance use and abuse and personal loss. Our parents and community members are encouraged to attend Coalition Against Substance Abuse (CASA) meetings and events that will be organized to promote wellness, social-emotional learning, and the increased protective factors that can benefit our North Shore families and students.
